I enjoy visiting friends homes and looking for the most obscure coffee cup when they offer. It is fun to try to complete the narrative of their lives from their coffee cups. For better or for worse, cups preach. Maybe the guy is generous with his money or blood (still strange for a coffee cup) or faithful at work. Whatever the case, they tell us a story.
In Ezra 1 we have cups that tell a pretty profound story.

Years ago I worked in a financial brokerage. In particular I worked in compliance. We were very meticulous about ensuring that we said and did everything right. One phrase I remember seeing regularly is, “Past performance is not indicative of future results.” In other words, just because a fund or company has done well in the past does not mean that it will do well in the future. Typically this is appended to data that demonstrates s...
Because I love Biblical Theology I am very excited about this new book from Dr. Greg Beale. People are calling it his magnum opus. I am excited about its depth and potential impact. I have already bought 3 copies to share.
From the publisher:
In A New Testament Biblical Theology: The Unfolding of the Old Testament in the New, this comprehensive exposition, a leading New Testament scholar explores the unfolding theological unity of the entire Bib...
I was recently in for a doctor’s visit and was attempting to turn our time of chit-chat into gospel-chat. As I made my move the Dr was receptive. When I told him I am a pastor he smiled and asked, “Where do you guys get the topics for your sermons?”
Without thinking I gave what I think was a great answer, “The Bible.”
He smiled and said, “I guess I walked into that one.”
But as we talked he gave the data ...
Prior to meeting the woman who would become his wife and help him populate the genealogy of the ‘seed’, we see the patriarch Isaac retiring to seclusion in a field. And what do we learn that he is intending on doing? The text informs us that he is headed out “to meditate.”
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening…(Gen 24.63a)
I find the inclusion of this fact very interesting.
What might Isaac be medit...
At the doorpost of the 15th Psalm the songwriter asks a couple of questions. These questions deal with how someone might safely dwell in the presence of God. That is, how may someone have access to God and his covenant blessings?
What follows in the Psalm are descriptions or perhaps better, the qualifications of this one who may ascend to this holy hill.
One thing you will notice in this passage is that the various descriptions of this godly one ...

Do you find yourself apologizing for God?
You may not articulate it in the words, “I’m sorry that my God is like this.” However, there is some indication that the sharp edges of the character of God are better ignored, diluted, or otherwise recast so as to make his actions more acceptable. Don’t misunderstand, I am not talking primarily to liberals here but rather to evangelicals. Mr. or Mrs. card carrying evangelical, ar...
“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak,
and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.
2 May my teaching drop as the rain,
my speech distill as the dew,
like gentle rain upon the tender grass,
and like showers upon the herb.
3 For I will proclaim the name of the LORD;
ascribe greatness to our God! Dt 32:1–3.

The Bible is full of surprises. Passages like Deuteronomy 32 tend to knock the wind out of you–even when you kind of know what’s coming.
The Nation of Israel is about to enter the promised land. They have been effectively led, warned, and judged by the Lord. Moses is their faithful and patient leader. He knows God. He speaks to God on their behalf.
Then we read this:
That very day the LORD spoke to Moses, “Go up this mountain of t...
